A yankee is a jib sail, often seen on cutter rigged vessels. The yankee flies forward of any other jibs, and its tack is usually secured at the edge of a bowsprit. Yankees are a good sail to have on a furler, because of the precarious nature of hoisting and dousing sails out on the bowsprit.
